Talbot Historical Society Project Rewind: The Best of Jousting Celebrates

July 12, 2024 by Talbot Historical Society

Share

This picture shows the winning knights and their ladies at the 1897 St. Joseph’s Jousting Tournament at Cordova, Maryland! Larry Hitchens shared both the photo and an October. 16, 1960 Sunday Magazine article about the Jousting event in 1897. The woman at left with the bouquet is identified in the article as Gussie McGinney and her champion, wearing the sash, Gus Callahan. Gussie later married her champion! According to the article the August Jousting Tournament started with a family style picnic at noon, the Tournament at 2, and another family picnic at dusk to end the special day! Do you have memories of attending St. Joseph’s Jousting Tournament that was held for decades?

  1. Paul Callahan says

That would be my great grandparents Gus & Gussie! Most of us Eastern Shore Callahan’s are descendants of Darby Callahan who came to Kent Island in 1680. Supposedly Darby was an indentured servant in Virginia and ended up marrying his master’s daughter. He got land on Kent Island as part of her dowry. Very typical of us Callahans!
