Can you identify this Log Canoe? The buildings on the shoreline behind the racing Log Canoe identify its location and a possible date estimate. The building shapes and sizes mirror postcards that we have of the W. H. Valliant Packing Company in Bellevue, Maryland! So the race was at Oxford, Maryland’s Tred Avon Yacht Club on the Tred Avon River. The Packing Plant began packing oysters, crabs, and vegetables about 1899. In 1924 a fire destroyed the plant but W. H. Valliant rebuilt it and it didn’t shut down permanently until 1946! In the 1960’s the Bellevue Landing was purchased by Talbot County and the area was improved to include rented boat slips, a boat ramp, and other amenities. This photo was probably taken in the 1930’s or 1940’s! Facts: talbotcountymd.gov. Photo from the Talbot Historical Society’s H. Robins Hollyday Collection .
