As kids head back to school, 25 Talbot County students have summer camp tales to share thanks to Talbot Mentors.
Each year, Talbot Mentors offers youngsters in its program the opportunity to attend camps both local and afar. Support from the community provides the funding to give mentees experiences that may not otherwise have been available to them.
Camps attended this year included Camp Pecometh, Coach Wooten Basketball Camp, Disney Spectacular Chorale Camp, the Naval Academy Volleyball Camp, Swim Kids, Talbot County Parks and Recreation, the YMCA, and Young Life.
Jade Joyner spent a week at Camp Pecometh, participating in the camp’s “Splashdown” program. At the residential camp, she enjoyed tubing, canoeing and a variety of other water activities, while meeting new people and making new friends.
Jade said she “learned about God and safety on the water” at the Christian camp. She liked that there was “no drama involved” in getting along with her fellow campers and is looking forward to going back again next year.
This was Jade’s second year attending Camp Pecometh. “Jade was apprehensive last year,” said her mentor, Ginger Roupe, “but she couldn’t wait to go this year.”
The summer camp program was made possible this year through funding from the Chesapeake Children’s Theatre, the Children’s Home Foundation, and the Miles River Yacht Club Foundation, along with individual donations raised through Talbot Mentors’ spring appeal.
Talbot Mentors Executive Director Natalie Costanzo thanked the organizations and individuals whose support enables the children to attend the camps.
“One of our key goals is to expand our mentees’ opportunities and range of experiences,” she said. “By offering them the ability to attend these summer camps, we’re able to enhance the efforts of our volunteer mentors and give the kids experiences they’ll never forget.”
