On Saturday, September 17th, approximately 120 Tilghman Islanders enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs and corn on the cob at the first annual Tilghman Heritage Day picnic held at the Tilghman Watermen’s Museum. In addition to driving in cars and pick-up trucks, residents walked to the picnic, local children came on bikes, and two people came down the road in wheelchairs. Phillips Wharf Environmental Center shared their Fishmobile with attendees. Many residents who had never been in the Museum or the Fishmobile had their first tour. Children played Corn Hole and Charlotte Fluharty provided music for the event.
All four prize categories were swept by the Herman Harrison and Leroy Gowe, Sr. Families. Leroy Gowe, Sr., age 80 was recognized as the oldest working waterman present. The Herman Harrison Family won for being the largest family attending. The Harrison Family and the Gowe Family each had 4 generations in attendance and each had the most working watermen in a family attending. Each family will receive an 8 x 10 photo of their family as a prize.
