The Associated Press is reporting that Berlin, MD. is now certified by the state of Maryland as a sustainable community per guidelines set forth under a statewide initiative, Sustainable Maryland, organized and managed by the Environmental Finance Center at University of Maryland’s Center. Chestertown is one of twenty-two other communities in the state working on the certification.
The Sustainable Maryland Program is based on Sustainable New Jersey, the first comprehensive certification program in the country for municipalities that want to protect their natural assets and revitalize their communities, while using best practices in resource areas like water, energy, land use, health, food, and economy.
