For the month of October, Trippe-Hilderbrandt Gallery in Easton will feature the varied and interesting sculpture of Judge John C. North II.
Known to many as “The Judge”, trophy winning log canoe captain, and vintage automobile aficionado, John North is also a fascinating artist.
Born and raised in Easton, Judge North attended local schools and received degrees from the University of Virginia and Harvard Law School. He and his father practiced law locally as well as serving 9 years as State’s Attorney for Talbot County, 18 years as Judge of the District and Circuit Courts and 12 years as Chairman of the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Commission. He is a founding member and president of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.
For over 60 years, Judge North has captained the log canoe Island Bird(1882-built by his great-grandfather) and won every major log canoe trophy. As a collector/restorer of fine vintage automobiles, North was active in the establishment of the St. Michaels Concours d’Elegance. He designed and sculpted all of the trophies it has awarded.
His sculptures are inspired by ships and automobiles but he also creates quite interesting pieces built from imagination. His award-winning abstract and semi-representational sculpture may be found in numerous private collections. Opening reception during First Friday Gallery Walk from 5-8 PM. Trippe-Hilderbrandt Gallery is located at 23 N. Harrison St. in the heart of Historic Easton. 410-310-8727 trippehilderbrandtgallery.com
