The War of 1812 is coming back to Talbot County next year.
Several county organizations are holding an informational meeting Saturday, Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. in the St. Michaels Library to discuss plans for commemorating the 200th anniversary of that understudied and often forgotten war between the young United States and Great Britain.
The Royal British Navy invaded the Chesapeake Bay, burned Washington, D.C. and bombarded Baltimore during the war. The British also attempted an ill-fated invasion of St. Michaels on Aug. 10, 1813 and caused general havoc up and down the Bay.
Marie Martin of the St. Michaels Museum and St. Michaels Business Association is organizing the Sept. 24 meeting that will include naval historian William Dudley, heritage tourism consultant Donna Dudley, Beth Hansen of the Historical Society of Talbot County and Julie Imirie of the St. Michaels Business Association.
Plans are under way for events and activities in 2012 and 2013 to educate and entertain local residents and visitor about the years of warfare that rocked the region after President James Madison declared war on Great Britain on June 18, 1812.
