The Women & Girls Fund of the Mid-Shore has announced that nominations are being accepted through February 15th for the annual Women & Girls Fund Award. The award was established in 2004 to honor a community member from Kent, Queen Anne’s, Caroline, Talbot or Dorchester County, who has made outstanding professional or personal contributions towards addressing the needs of local women and girls in the region.
The award will be presented at the Fund’s 12th Annual Grants Luncheon on April 28, 2014, at River House at the Easton Club. Candidates for this award should have demonstrated leadership, vision, integrity, compassion, cooperation and generosity of time and talent in their efforts to improve the lives and opportunities of women and girls.
The Fund’s Award last year went to five women who, through their concerns about victims of sexual violence and other traumas in this rural area, founded the mental health and rape crisis center known as For All Seasons in the mid-1980s.
According to the late Richard Goldstein, the For All Seasons Executive Director who proposed the nomination last year, “Joy Price, Kathleen Francis, Maureen Jacobs, Janet Pfeffer, and Nancy Wilson pooled their resources and talents to create a private not-for-profit corporation that over the years has provided a continuum of supportive services to countless women and girls.” Today, For All Seasons has offices in each of the five Mid-Shore counties and provides victim services 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
The late Lois Duffy of Centreville and Chestertown was the recipient of the first award. In succeeding years, the Women & Girls Fund has honored Harriet Critchlow, Sandra King, Dr. Maria Boria, Sister Patricia Gamgort, O.S.B., Tracy Davenport, Sandra Redd, of Easton, Sara Jane Davidson, and Maryland Circuit Court Judge Karen Murphy Jensen.
