Ouvert Gallery of St. Michaels is proud to exhibit the photographic works of the late Lin Layton during the month of April, with an Opening Reception on Saturday, April 2, from 6pm – 8pm. Layton was a celebrated, award winning local photographer and community advocate. In honor of her love of this community and her commitment to giving back, 10% of sales will be donated to CASA of the Mid-Shore. The event includes a wine and cheese reception with live music by Emma Myers.
Layton was an Elder Law Attorney for 23 years and was inducted in the “Circle of Excellence.” She generously donated her time as President of the Board for CASA of the Mid-Shore, served as a board member for Londonderry, and as a volunteer for various student and church groups. She was instrumental in the creation of the Talbot County Commission of Aging in 2003, and the Talbot County Senior Center, located at 400 Brookletts Avenue was built during Lin’s tenure on the Commission. Layton had a passion for photography that spanned her lifetime, beginning with a school project her sixth grade year when her teacher built a darkroom out of pallets and cardboard. She learned how to photograph using an Argus C3, then how to develop and process her own film.
Her work was published in various magazines and newspapers, including Maryland Life Magazine, What’s Up Eastern Shore, Attraction Magazine and the Star Democrat Newspaper. She won the Biggs Shot Award from the Biggs Museum of Art in Dover, DE, the Easton Plein Air Arts Festival Photography Award, as well as awards from the Kent Island Federation of Art and the Dorchester Center for the Arts.
Layton’s photography featured people, places, nature, maritime scenes and abstracts. Her great love was to spend the day out in nature capturing its beauty. She had a passion for recording “vanishing landscapes” as development replaced landscape vistas and family farms. “Lin Layton’s images were intimate and personal,” says Steve Dembo, owner of the former Easton Gallery of Photographic Arts, where Lin worked as gallery manager. “She saw things that others, even those standing right next to her did not see. Her photography captured the texture and beauty of the vanishing landscapes of the Eastern Shore; whether it was the stillness of an open field at dawn or the architecture of a barn that had stood for generations, she worked to preserve the heritage that is rapidly disappearing.”
The April exhibit entitled “The Works of Lin Layton” will feature framed photographs and prints that show the range of Layton’s talent and passion. “Lin Layton was an integral part of CASA for many years, and her dedication to our mission of helping children never wavered,” says Robin Davenport, Executive Director of CASA of the Mid-Shore. “She went above and beyond to help us lift up the lives of children who had been abused, neglected or abandoned.”
Ouvert Gallery is located at 207 S. Talbot Street in the heart of St. Michaels and is a community minded business dedicated to culture, the arts, and the people of the Mid-Shore.
