Baltimore Magazine: Mid-Shore Author Lydia Woolever Digs Deep into Maryland Crab Industry

July 28, 2021 by Spy Agent 5 - 00 Section

One of the Spy’s favorite Baltimore Magazine authors, Lydia Woolever, has once again made the Eastern Shore the focus of her latest article as she tackles the complex crab industry attempting to keep up with consumer demand.

“In Maryland, the commercial blue crab harvest is now worth more than three times that of oysters and rockfish combined, with some 34 million pounds harvested in 2019, at a dockside value of more than $56 million. As of press time, a bushel of males exceeded $300, while a pound of meat peaked at $50—driven in part by the coronavirus pandemic, during which local consumers flocked for carry-out crabs as a source of comfort.”

Spy Minute: Sheryl Southwick’s Trees at Adkins Arboretum

July 11, 2021 by Spy Agent 5 - 00 Section

The Spy has been a big fan of Sheryl Southwick’s artwork for some time. Over the years, we’ve watched as Sheryl has taken on special topics near and dear to her heart and turned these into visual images that draw the viewer inward.

And that is the case of Southwick’s paintings and collages of trees. Now on display at the Adkins Arboretum for the balance of the summer, the artist shares with her audience dreamy forests filled with glints of light and shadow, enticing paths winding back under the trees, and color-drenched glades where every detail seems to be dancing.

A Spy was sent to investigate yesterday and came back with this short report.

This video is approximately one minute in length.

A Washington Post Analysis of the 1st District: Could Harris Lose His Job?

July 4, 2021 by Spy Agent 5 - 00 Section

In today’s Washington Post, we found an interesting analysis of the 1st Congressional District and the fate of incumbent Andy Harris as Maryland begins the process of redistricting the state.

“Ten years ago, as Maryland Democrats sat down to redraw the state’s eight congressional districts, they considered making Republican members of Congress go extinct.

There were two in office at the time: brand-new Andy Harris on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, and Roscoe Bartlett in rural Western Maryland. As former governor Martin O’Malley (D) later admitted in federal court, Democrats ultimately decided just to go after Bartlett, if only because it was easier. And their plan worked: A Republican has not won that seat since.

Now, ahead of a new round of redistricting, Harris is fundraising off the possibility that he could be Democrats’ next — and last — Republican target. “Democrats are trying to REDRAW my congressional district to DEFEAT ME,” he claimed in a recent campaign mailer.”

Spy Moment: Art, Music and Kids at Avalon’s Stoltz Pavilion

May 13, 2021 by Spy Agent 5 - 00 Section

As many know in Talbot County, the Avalon Foundation makes kids programming a high priority in their overall mission in the community. From theatre to music and visual art, the foundation is dedicated to find new ways for young students to engage and encounter all forms of art.

But rarely are these programs as spontaneous as what took place yesterday at Avalon’s Stoltz Pavilion. One of Easton’s favorite, musician Robbie Schaefer and Avalon staff, held an impromptu “Art Day” behind Talbotown with children creating both art and music.

One of our Spy agents has provided a surveillance video to share.

This video is approximately two minutes in length. For more information about the Avalon Foundation please go here
