Was it really twenty years ago that Matthew Sweet’s exceptional album, Girlfriend, came out ? It garnered him both critical acclaim and mainstream appeal. He’ll be performing this classic in its entirety, along with tunes from his latest output, Modern Art, at the Avalon Theatre in Easton Saturday, October 29.
Prior to the breakout Girlfriend, Sweet worked with Michael Stipe and other artists in the Athens, Georgia music scene. He was picked up by both Columbia and A&M records, producing albums with some decent reviews, but no commercial success. Girlfriend, released in October of ’91 and originally titled Nothing Lasts, was an almost immediate success, fusing the influences of the Beatles, Big Star, REM, and Neil Young into a distinctive, melodic style.
Since then he has collaborated with various artists, forming The Thorns with Shawn Mullins and Pete Droge, and producing two cover albums with the Bangles’ Susanna Hoffs; Under the Covers, Volumes I and II.
Whether you’re a serious music buff or someone who just loves good guitar-driven pop, you’ll want to be there when Sweet brings to life an album that Entertainment Weekly calls “a masterpiece of spare, postmodern pop.”
The Shadowboxers will open.
