The road to Chestertown for Washington College’s President Mitchell Reiss has been a far more serendipitous one than most of his 26 predecessors. A native of Boston suburbs, the product of New England education, and a diplomat by training and vocation, it was hard for Dr. Reiss and his wife Elisabeth to ever imagine he would lead a small liberal arts college, let alone on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. But as he as learned over the course of his impressive career, surprises are the most predictable of occurrences.
Now settling into his second year in office, Dr. Reiss candidly assesses Washington College and Chestertown’s future, their economic challenges, and some of the extraordinary opportunities this historic town-gown partnership might share in the future.
