Talbot Mentors is launching a new afterschool program for its students and is looking for help from the community to make it a better experience for the kids.
Beginning January 7, its new Afterschool Club will be held at the Talbot Mentors office from 3 to 6 p.m. every Thursday. Students in the Talbot Mentors program are welcome to participate at no cost. The club will offer homework assistance, snacks and activities, with math, science, reading and English tutors available for free tutoring.
Other community organizations are joining with Talbot Mentors to provide fun educational experiences for the students. Talbot County 4-H Club and the Academy Art Museum will offer weekly activities at the Afterschool Club.
Talbot Mentors Executive Director Natalie Costanzo is enthusiastic about the new program. “It is wonderful to be able to work with the community to help our kids improve academically, but also give them somewhere safe and fun to go to after school once a week,” she said.
To support the Afterschool Club activities, Costanzo is asking for assistance from individuals who can donate items on Talbot Mentors’ wish list.
Some of the items that the club could use include electronics, such as a Bose wireless speaker, iPads and a Blu-ray DVD player to allow students to listen to music and play educational games. The club also needs basketballs and a stand-alone hoop to give kids some outdoor exercise and new pool cues and balls for indoor fun.
“The kids would so appreciate any help people could give in donating these items,” said Costanzo. “But the most important thing on our wish list is more volunteer mentors. A mentor means the world to a child.”
