Tred Avon Players (TAP) presents the sophisticated comedy of “The Women” by Claire Booth Luce, opening May 3. Director Tom Quimby reprises the all time, standing room only hit of 1990. The original 1936 play and the 1939 movie featured outstanding female stars of the era such as Norma Shearer, Rosalind Russell, Marjorie Main, Joan Fontaine, Hedda Hopper, and Joan Crawford.
“The Women” highlights the best and worst of the issues of love, jealousy, marital strife, and self-actualization encountered by a circle of wealthy Manhattan women. Dynamics of the interaction between the wealthy and working class are intriguing. How each woman meets the challenges arising during the beginning of women’s liberation is presented with wit and cleverness.
With over 45 years of theatre experience, as a professor in acting, a professional actor on stage and TV, and director for numerous theatres, Director Tom Quimby is glad to be returning to TAP and working with old friends and new! Quimby comments on his decision to bring “The Women” back to the TAP stage, “I wanted to revive “The Women” because it is such a great opportunity and such a pleasure for a gay man to be surrounded by so many talented and beautiful WOMEN!. It will not be a copy of the original. That’s impossible to recreate. It will be a wonderful opportunity to revisit it with a different cast of glorious, stylish….WOMEN”
Quimby’s stylish women include a cast of 20 women, 14 of whom are new to the Tred Avon Players stage! Gina Brent, Anna Chroniger, Ashley Chroniger, Sally Heckman, Corrie James, Anna Kusinitz, Jena Latham, Alison Lynch, Sara Lyons, Galen Marquess, Leigh Marquess, Nicole Millette, Susan Patterson, Dale Rauch, Lynn Sanchez, Nancy Sawyer, Peggy Sharp, Erica Tecce, Ezra Vervin, and Sheila Wainwright.
The production crew consists of producer Fiona Foster, production stage manager Bethany Driggs, Stage manager Barbara Rybacki, with set design and construction by Lawrie Jessup and Pam Hamilton, artistic set design and painting by Jesse Capps and John Swann, costumes by Kate Levey, light design by Skipper Marquess, light operator, Rob Sanchez, and sound design by Patrick Fee.
“These ladies are funny, impetuous, tragic, giddy, courageous, struggling to make sense of their world, defiant amidst the storms of life and, most of all, maintaining a strong grasp on the absurdity of the games they must play.” adds Quimby.
