The Mid-Shore Fresh Start Program is an Easton community based non-profit organization designed to offer life-saving transitional housing to bridge the gap between treatment and long term recovery for recovering addicts and alcoholics.
Here, Director Tori Brummell speaks about the project which has succeeded in helping 52 men during the three year period since their founding in 2011.
Fresh Start offers stable housing for up to one year along with supportive resources like employment/job readiness activities, parenting skills and education improvement options.
The transitional housing is serving the five-county area of Queen Anne’s, Kent, Talbot, Caroline and Dorcester.
As MSFS seeks grant funding, it continues to operate with the support of the local Talbot community. “Often the residents that come here do not have jobs or the money to afford the rent so we underwrite that until they are employed. Our expenses run about $4,500 for three apartments, utilities, office space and office expenses, ” Brummell says.
MSFS has received awards from the state delegate’s office, Governor’s office, NAACP and Talbot Partnership.
Tori Brummell, Director, talks about the program here.

Beginning tonight the State Highway Administration (SHA) will repair a damaged pipe under eastbound US 50, just east of I-97 near Annapolis in Anne Arundel County. Work includes using ground-penetrating radar to detect any voids near the metal pipe, using video cameras to inspect the pipe, lining the pipe, backfilling and patching US 50. This work is necessary following a partial collapse of the pipe in early June. SHA crews temporarily filled and patched the pipe to reopen the roadway for morning rush hour; this week’s work will restore the pipe’s function as a stormwater drain.
Tonight, SHA will close one lane of eastbound US 50 at Exit 22 (MD 665/Aris T. Allen Blvd.) from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. This closure will allow SHA to inspect and clean the pipe.
Beginning at 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 25 and Thursday, June 26, SHA will close two lanes along eastbound US 50 and then all eastbound lanes at 10 p.m. Posted detour signs will direct motorists to MD 665 (Aris T. Allen Blvd.) to return to eastbound US 50 past the work zone. Crews will open all lanes by 5 a.m. Work is weather permitting and these phases include installing a new pipe lining and patching the eastbound US 50 lanes.
SHA encourages motorists traveling east through Annapolis to plan ahead and allow extra time during work hours. All work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled for the following night. However, SHA will not perform patching operations on Friday, June 27 due to anticipated heavy traffic volumes. If necessary, crews will complete the work Saturday, June 28 overnight into Sunday, June 29.
Traffic on westbound US 50 and I-97 should not be affected by this work.
While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Drivers, passengers as well as workers are at risk. Safer driving. Safer work zones. For everyone.

(Easton)—The Talbot County Government has rolled out the first of two technology enhancement initiatives that will both streamline services for County residents and increase efficiencies for employees.
“Enhancing our technological capabilities has been a top priority for this Council,” says Corey Pack, County Council President. “These enhancements certainly allow us to realize operational efficiencies, but they ultimately help us better serve our community. That’s what we were elected to do.”
Perhaps the most noticeable advancement is a visually driven website that includes a number of state-of-the-art interactive features.
Document management software adopted earlier this year allows residents to both search and watch Council meetings using a digitized, time-stamped agenda. Instead of watching an entire video, users can now visit the County website and selectively view portions of Council meetings that best match their interests.
The Parks and Recreation Department has also adopted new software that allows participants to sign up online for programs and reserve pavilions and party rooms at the Community Center. Improved internet connectivity at this facility includes free Wi-Fi for visitors.
“We are excited to offer online registration to our participants,” says Preston Peper, director of Talbot County’s Parks and Recreation Department. “This new feature makes registering for classes and reserving pavilions, parties and rooms much simpler. There’s no need for mailing or dropping off payments anymore. Best of all, this feature is available anywhere you can log onto the internet.”
Information about County departments and services, as well as other governmental agencies, has also been restructured to make it easier for users to find. Residents have access to live roadway closure information and searchable GIS maps for planning. In addition, Hog Neck Golf Course has introduced a new system that allows golfers to sign up for tee times and pay for rounds online.
Later this year, a second technology roll out will automate several internal Government functions including the ability to track the County’s permitting and inspection services.
“The changes we’ve made really pull together the services the Talbot County Government offers and presents them in a more user-friendly, easy-to-navigate format,” says Information Technology Director Parker Durham.
Acting County Manager and Emergency Services Director Clay Stamp says implementing technology solutions enhances communication and allows us to provide better customer service to County residents. “We’re committed to excellence, and this is a big step forward for Talbot County,” he says.

University of Maryland Shore Regional Health will begin construction on an ambulatory surgery center at UM Shore Medical Pavilion at Queenstown. Scheduled to open by Dec. 31, 2014, the new Surgery Center at Queenstown will provide a range of outpatient surgery options for residents of Queen Anne’s County and the surrounding region.
The $7 million facility is initially being funded by University of Maryland Medical System and will be managed by UM Shore Regional Health. The 11,000-square-foot Surgery Center at Queenstown will have one Class C general purpose surgery suite and three procedure rooms.
“This expansion of outpatient surgical procedures will bring more health care choices closer to home for the people of Queen Anne’s County and the surrounding region,” said William Huffner, MD, chief medical officer for UM Shore Regional Health.
“The Surgery Center at Queenstown is one more way we are living our mission — creating healthier communities together — by expanding opportunities to meet the health care needs of people in our region,” said Ken Kozel, president and CEO of UM Shore Regional Health.
“We value our partnership with UM Shore Regional Health and are pleased to see this facility expanding to meet the growing health care needs of Queen Anne’s County,” said Queen Anne’s County Commission President Philip Dumenil.
The Surgery Center was designed by the architecture firm Hord Coplan Macht Inc. of Baltimore. General contractor for the project is The Whiting-Turner Contracting Co.
UM Shore Medical Pavilion at Queenstown is a modern, state-of-the-art facility that is quickly growing as a premier address for health providers on the Eastern Shore. Situated along Route 50 next to the UM Shore Emergency Center at Queenstown, it is a highly visible and accessible center of high quality medical services for the region.

The veterans of America, their benefits, and services should not be a political football. Congressional and administration action must be swift and effective. But that may be a lot to expect from our national government these days.
It is time for Democrats and Republicans alike to work swiftly to correct the longstanding and systemic failures, corruption, and inadequate service being experienced by American veterans of all ages.
This is especially true of those veterans wounded at the point of a rifle, a booby trap, or an exploding LED. The wounds of war must be addressed quickly and effectively, and these veterans should neither be neglected nor dismissed.
The establishment of quotas by executives in the Veterans Administration has tragically led to record falsification and greed. Administrators seeking to meet such quotas fudged their appointment numbers and asked other VA employees to lie and cover up. Not acceptable. Quotas have no place in a system dedicated to healing the wounds of war.
From the Civil War to the current fighting in Afghanistan, the United States has recognized its obligations to the veterans of many conflicts, both near and far President Abraham Lincoln laid down the marker for caring for American veterans in his Gettysburg address when he said, “It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.”
American veterans have continued to carry on the noble work of protecting freedom and democracy. And some 150 years after the Civil War, it is reprehensible that the United States government would allow there to be a wait list of over 57,000 medical appointments.
This travesty cannot be allowed to continue to exist. Simply forcing the resignation of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs will not cure this disaster.
It is time to thoroughly examine this situation and perhaps to take a serious look at many agencies of our government, which have over the years become bloated, greedy, and significantly ineffective.
The United States government can change; it simply takes leadership, courage, honesty, and guts.

It was brought to my attention several months ago that Joe Gamble had filed to run for the Sheriff of Talbot County. I have known Joe for over 20 years and had the distinct pleasure of working with him throughout the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I am retired member of the Maryland State Police Drug Enforcement Division and served as an investigator, task force supervisor and regional commander for the state. My last assignment before retirement was Commander of the Mid-Shore, overseeing the task forces of Talbot, Caroline and Dorchester Counties.
During this assignment I worked with both Joe Gamble and Dallas Pope on a regular basis. Both men are very intelligent leaders that are hard working and extremely dedicated to their duty as law enforcement supervisors. With that being said, hard work and dedication is not always the only pathway to success. Successful law enforcement is heavily dependent on cooperation, forged- trusting relationships between allied agencies, and respect from those you lead. In my experience working with both men Joe Gamble is the clear choice for Talbot County Sheriff. Joe Gamble possesses the expertise as well as the personal and professional skills necessary to properly manage the professionals employed by the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office.
Joe is a leader that continually stands out because of his investigative skills as well as his ability to work hand in hand with local, state, and federal police agencies on a common goal. I have personally witnessed Joe’s outstanding ability to organize and supervise for over 20 years. His talent for leadership starts with the deep respect he displays to law enforcement officers regardless of their rank or department. Joe Gamble is a self motivated leader that rises to the top, lead from the front and is always quick to give others credit for a mission’s success.
In closing I want to remind the citizens that by electing Joe Gamble as the next Sheriff of Talbot County you are not only getting a model law enforcement professional, you are electing an outstanding human being that has the needs of Talbot County at heart. Joe has been a mentor to youth as a sports coach and a mentor to future and current law enforcement leaders through his work with the Maryland State Police. Joe Gamble is the individual needed to move the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office in the right direction.

Another Juneteenth
A sestina for the G.A.R. Post #25 re-opening, June 21, 2014
This place a nugget of gold in a sea of clay
Today we stand on precious ground
A stoned arch bridging many an uncertain day
A monument for shoulder-to-the-grindstone will
We come to bear witness and to bare our hearts
Here where the past is buried in the marrow of bones
Wind chimed clank and clang of dry bones
A chalice of wisdom from fired clay
Reverent music poured into open hearts
Many colors carpet this hallowed ground
This is a cornerstone of will
The founders’ foresight promised us this day
Raise the pennants and praise the day
The drummer lives in incus bones
Trees planted by the waters of will
A joyful insistence encrypted in this clay
Let hurrahs and hallelujahs shake the ground
And stir the longing in our hearts
Ella scatting an anthem for our hearts
Spirit movers, seekers of a breaking day
The visionary’s broom sweeping this ground
This monument to long buried bones
Tread carefully over this layered clay
Built by communal warriors of will
On the road to glory by grace and will
The boon of freedom glowing in our hearts
Moisten the yard and pack down the clay
Fry the fish and fixings to celebrate the day
And set the legends sifting through our bones
Our dancing DNA moonwalking on sacred ground
Today a tower of tolerance stands on hard won ground
Today we acknowledge the power of a righteous will
Today we refresh dreams and replenish the legacy of bones
Today our heroes rest in the shelter of our hearts
Today a day like no other day
Today we patina the world in a crust of clay
Praise to this persistent will, that seized this day
Protect this swirling ground and blood mottled clay
Place the merit bones of our past in the trove of our hearts

A Praise Song For Our Ancestors
(Charles Sumner Post #25 reopening June 21, 2014)
We are dancing in the swirling light
Of an old communal circle
Our clasped hands are a link
Between back then and someday
Our presence here testament
To this cathedral of memory
We are the children of their children’s children
Progeny of blood and lash
A testament to solidarity
A monument to courage
This hall is an act of collective will
It embraces passive ingenuity
Conjured in a mist of secrets
Our elders unraveled the coffle of lynch laws
Wearing the skin of determination
We rejoice because those elders
Those wisdom trees
Are rooted in ancient traditions
Once again we inhabit this fleeting scent
This perfume of power, this stairway of determination
Today is both homecoming and uprising
We stand on the rock where the strong folks stood
We praise the freedom fighters
Praise the kinsmen of justice
And the persistent peace seekers
Oh we are here to salute the stalwarts
The solemn shapers
Who first danced and danced and danced
Proud spirited grace
Swirling in the army hall
Certain that this day would come
Now we rise, a fresh wave breaking over a new day
We stand here
On the shoulders of those purposeful people
We walk in their footsteps
We stand in the long shadow proud folks
People who would not wallow
In the muck and mire
Of ash and tear,
They created this neutral site,
This village square
This precious palace
A University of their own
A magical music box
Producing a sound track
For the long trek toward justice
Voting rights measured by the square foot
Human reverence spread like flowers over
The graves of ALL of the fallen
We re-inhabit this place of promise
We come here in praise of men and women
That marched, voted, and danced
With fierce determination
We return with respectful praise
For the sepia shadows and lingering memories
Swirling in the army hall
Dancing in that dappled light
‘Tween dream and memory
That way sorrow, this way home
Fraternal spirits bobbing and weaving
In the flickering rays of remembrance
Let today become a verse
In a song of exultation
A praise song for the Colored Vets
A praise song for the benevolent women
A praise song for the keepers of the vision
(We serenade all who have brought us to this gathering place
To harvest the rewards of a self determined future.} (repeat)

The Talbot Interfaith Shelter announces the move of its signature cycling event to Hog Neck Golf Course. The third annual Shelter Century Fall Foliage Tour will be held on October 18, 2014 with a ‘show and go’ start from 7:00 – 9:00 a.m. The event features four separate rides, a 10 mile ride, a 33 mile fitness ride, a metric century (63 mile) and a full century (100 mile) ride. This year will also feature the new #lovewins 5K walk through the award-winning Hog Neck golf course. Proceeds benefit the Talbot Interfaith Shelter (TIS), a cold weather homeless shelter in Talbot County, MD.
The fall foliage ride takes cyclists through picturesque Talbot County, on quiet roads with gentle hills rising through lush farmland and forests with water views of the Choptank River. Starting and ending at the famed Hog Neck Golf Course, cyclists and walkers will be celebrated with an after-party complete with hot food, homemade pie, local brews and the sweet sounds of singer Jayme Ploff.
The event is a ride, not a race. Rest stops will be available for all courses with light food, refreshments and restrooms. The course is just minutes from Easton, offering cyclists and their families shopping, dining and lodging.
Cyclists who wish to support the event by raising funds for the Shelter can do so through the active.com registration system, and special prizes and fashionable new cycling jerseys will be offered to winning fund raisers. Teams are encouraged, as are costumes and slogans. Long sleeved technical shirts and cool shirts for walkers are cornerstones of the event. Teams, sponsors and fund raising cyclists will be supported and promoted on social media.
The Talbot Interfaith Shelter is dedicated both to providing safe, temporary shelter to men, women, and children who lack adequate housing, and to raising awareness of the issues of homelessness in Talbot County. Fourteen faith communities rotate the homeless shelter through their church facilities during the cold weather months. Over 400 volunteers from the faith communities have worked together since 2008 to keep neighbors off the streets and in warm beds during the winter. Sponsors and cyclists participating in the event will directly help provide shelter to our homeless neighbors.
To register to ride or sponsor the event, visit the Shelter Century website (www.sheltercentury.org). For information about the Talbot Interfaith Shelter, see their website (www.talbotinterfaithshelter.org). For additional information or questions, call 443-205-2828 or email [email protected].
