Talbot County’s Black Civil War Soldiers: A Legacy of Valor

May 28, 2025 by Talbot Historical Society

The Talbot Historical Society, in partnership with the Talbot County Free Library, is proud to present the next installment in its Date With History lecture series: “Talbot County’s United States Colored Troops: A Story of Valor and Honor” featuring Clara L. Small, Ph.D., Emerita Professor of History at Salisbury University.

Dr. Small, one of Maryland’s most distinguished historians of African American life and culture, will explore the remarkable story of the more than 600 United States Colored Troops from Talbot County—both enslaved and free—who fought with extraordinary courage during the Civil War. Their heroic service not only contributed to the Union’s preservation but also laid the foundation for the historic community of Unionville, established by returning soldiers and their families after the war.

This powerful and inspiring lecture will take place on Tuesday, June 17 at 1:00 PM at the Talbot County Free Library in Easton.

Admission is free, but reservations are encouraged.

Talbot Historical Society Project Rewind: Ride ’em Donkeys

May 16, 2025 by Talbot Historical Society

The question is what were a group of men and seven donkeys doing on the baseball field at Easton, Maryland’s Federal Park? Possibly Donkey Baseball?? Donkey Baseball gained popularity during the Depression years in the mid-1930’s. The players, except for the pitcher and the batter, rode donkeys. The fielders often had to dismount to catch the ball and then remount to throw it! Have you heard stories that you can share proving donkey baseball was played in Easton? Can you identify any of these men? Seven of the men have the same hats on. Perhaps they belonged to the same organization in Talbot County?

The Country School on Goldsborough Street in Easton, Maryland is hosting a gala this Saturday April 26 to celebrate their 90th anniversary! This 1966 picture is of three students wearing silly hats! April 11, 2025 by Talbot Historical Society

The Tidewater Inn on the corner of Harrison and Dover Streets celebrated its grand opening on September 2, 1949! The Hotel was built by A. Johnson Grymes. The interesting discovery found by looking closely at this 1954 Talbot Historical Society H. Robins Hollyday Collection photo is that there was a house where the Tidewater Inn’s Gold Room is today! Does anyone remember when that addition was added? Contact:
