When the Eastern Shore looks back on its small number of local natives who have served in state-wide public office, Denton’s Harry Hughes, Maryland’s Governor from 1979 to 1987, would be at the top of most people’s list as one of our very best. With simple honesty, first-rate intellect, a Caroline County brand of humor, and movie star good looks, Governor Hughes seems to personify all that we love to brag about when it comes to Shore leaders.
Comfortably retired in Denton for many years, Mr. Hughes maintains a schedule of someone half his age. He continues to play an active role in politics and conservation, as well as with his greatest love, the University of Maryland’s Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology, whose core mission is to bring together the agricultural, forestry, and environmental communities on the Shore to protect the health of the Chesapeake Bay.
In our interview, the Governor reflects on growing up in Denton, his love of baseball, and a certain nostalgia for the bi-partisanship during his time in government.
The interview lasts six minutes.
