Talbot Historical Society Project Rewind: Picking Up a New TV in Easton

September 19, 2025 by Talbot Historical Society

Television Sets have come a long way since this small round Zenith TV c. 1950! The Talbot Historical Society’s Laird Wise Collection archive envelope this photo was found in has Standard Auto written on it? Do you know where that store was in Talbot County? The first show I remember watching was Howdy Doody which ran from Dec. 27, 1947 until Sept. 24, 1960! Does anyone else remember Bob Smith and Clarabell the Clown and “It’s Howdy Doody Time!”? Also a favorite was The Mickey Mouse Club which ran from 1955 to 1959! Experiments on televisions were first started in the 1920’s and the first electronic transmissions were in the late 1920’s and 1930’s. P. S. The gentleman in the picture has just been identified by his family as Richmond “Dick” Hill. Facts: “History of Television” Wikipedia.

Talbot Historical Society Project Rewind: Let Meet at the Purity Gospel Church in Ivytown

September 12, 2025 by Talbot Historical Society

The Talbot Historical Society’s Laird Wise Collection has three c. 1949 pictures of the Purity Gospel Pentecostal Mission Church of Ivytown, Maryland in Talbot County.

The society was recently contacted by Bob Croswell who is researching churches in the Trappe area and has pictures that he took of the dilapidated remains of this church on Schwaninger Road just east of Manadier Road in the area called Ivytown ,about 1/2 mile north of the New Queen Esther AME church. The mystery we would all like solved is what happened to this congregation that was so active in the late 1940’s and 1950’s? Do you recognize any of these people or have any information about the church? Did they move to a different location?

Talbot Historical Society Project Rewind: Ewing Hardware Store Staff Gathers

August 29, 2025 by Talbot Historical Society

A special thanks to Tyler Horner for sharing your father Bob Horner’s picture of the staff of the T. Earl Ewing Hardware Store of Harrison Street! Tyler added that “the picture was taken between 1963 and 1966. The John Deere lawn tractor in the background was first offered in 1963 and my Dad worked for Ewing as a mechanic in the shop from 1960 until the blizzard of 1966. Pictured on the far right is T. Earl’s nephew and childhood friend, David Watson, along with Mr. Ewing standing next to him. I do not know the names of the other folks in the picture. Since my Dad took the picture with his Yashica camera, he was not in it.” Maybe you can help identify the rest of the staff?

Talbot Historical Society Project Rewind: Talking About the Ones that Didn’t Get Away

August 22, 2025 by Talbot Historical Society

This Talbot Historical Society H. Robins Hollyday Collection photo is not dated and the men holding the beautiful striped bass are also not identified? Can you help identify them? The striped bass minimum is 19 “ and the maximum 24” in Maryland at this time. At least 3 of the Rockfish appear to be way over that length proving the picture was taken at a time when the Chesapeake Bay Striped Bass were thriving better than at the present time.
