The newly established Retreat House at Hillsboro is offering a public lecture series, “The Spirituality of Aging,” in their Caroline County location. The “prayerful lecture” series will be led by Dorothy Linthicum, Program Director at Virginia Theological Seminary in the Center for the Ministry of Teaching, and will take place over three Thursdays – October 30, November 6 and 13 at 6:45 p.m. A free-will offering will be accepted.
Using scripture as the grounding, and engaging with stories, Ms. Linthicum will lead an exploration of both the lived experience and the spirituality of aging in the western culture. “Aging is on everyone’s mind,” said Linthicum, “and we are happy to provide a spiritual forum for the community.”
Under the visionary leadership of Former Bishop Bud Shand, the Retreat Center opened in July, 2014. Located on the grounds of historic St. Paul’s Church in the quiet town of Hillsboro, the center has already held a variety of events. Celtic worship services are held in the church at 5:30 p.m. on the third Saturday of the month and include song, silence and sharing. The century-old church is “a sanctuary for all who seek God’s presence,” explains Francie Thayer, Director of the Retreat House.
Retreats for men and women, discussions and book studies, individual quiet reflection, prayer and spiritual direction are taking place at the Retreat House. Visitors enjoy walking the four acres that include a cemetery and a traditional Chartres-style walking labyrinth. “Visitors love to walk the labyrinth,” Thayer said, “because it is a unique way to experience peace and quiet.”
The Retreat Center at Hillsboro is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Easton, MD. Located at 22005 Church Street, Hillsboro, Maryland, the Center is available for gatherings, individuals, and all those seeking God.
